I closed my eyes and imagined myself as the man-in-the-torn-yellow-sleeping-bag, clutching on to life. And I am reminded that, in that moment, nothing but one’s Vincent really matters. I think I would probably cocoon him as much as possible inside my coat or whatever I have left to wear, and his preservation would probably be the only (and final) concern I’d have until I’m gone or a miracle happens. Still on a serious note, your story immediately reminded me of Lieutenant Dan in Forest Gump and how, despite society’s maltreatment of him, found the courage to live on.
