I agree with you on: " You've got to immerse yourself in the language you want to learn and interact with native speakers in order to speak it like a native." No arguments there. And as a French speaker, I get that translation between French and English does help to some extent since many words share a common etymology and logic in linguistic expression.

But I still felt that word-for-word translation between two very different languages like East Asian ones and English is full of deep potholes (especially for beginners) in my experience as both a language learner and an instructor.
