Quick answer to your EXCELLENT query: Yes and no.
No, because sometimes it is the lack of changing attitudes (eg. towards the LGBTQ community -- to take a relatively extreme case in Japan) that keeps a country in the mindset of the Dark Ages.
But yes, as in the case of our osechi meal during New Year's holidays in Japan. Our attitudes about the degree of family unity or communion -- even patriarchy to some extent -- has definitely diminished as you've put it.
