Yes, I tend to agree but for a different reason.
The "road not taken" is not a non-conformist interpretation but rather a choice of the unfamiliar just for the sake of it. The hint (for me) is in the 2nd verse:
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same
I'm honestly not trying to equate myself to Robert Frost, but my personality is such that I too would go for the road less taken (as opposed to the road not taken). Here, I take it as the speaker stating that he is not regretting not having taken the first road.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
He's using the negative case to make a case for taking the 2nd road, the one he decided to tread.
What did he gain from it? Who cares. He doesn't. I don't. At least we're not haunted by the thought, "What if?"
