You Don’t Have a Say About Coming Into This World

But you have a say about going out

When we’re born, we’re just born.

We neither signed up for life nor willingly queued up at “Stork Express” baby delivery.

We were well past the cooked-egg stage when we became aware of our existence and egos. Lamenting our birth is like crying over spilt denatured proteins.

But many of us went through our teenage years resenting and protesting to our parents, teachers, and society at large.

“I never asked to be born!”

I was such a troubled teen, learning to be as resilient as my Canadian Gen X peers but constantly asking myself, “What’s the point of living?”

Of course, I got slapped and yelled at by my immigrant parents for questioning the purpose of my existence. They never gave me an answer, but I sought one myself.

Suppose you are of the ancient Greek school of thought, where the soul is separate from the body and mind. Then, I ask you to consider this: During our biological growth and development, the body and brain respond and adapt to an insane array of stimuli. Observable changes in size and chemistry depend on their health and their environment.
